Title Research: The Conjuring

  1. What titles are displayed during the opening sequences?                                                                            First, the opening sequence showed two pictures of families. One is labeled the Perron family, and the other was the Warren family. I assume that these are the families in the movies. Next, it includes all the names of the actors and actresses. The sequence then displays the writers, the director, the producers, and photography. It also shows the editing, the casting, the designers, and the music. Then all the production companies are listed and the title is shown.
  2. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?                                                                              Throughout the sequence, there are a lot of newspaper cutouts and papers in the background. All of them are related to ghosts, supernatural killings, dolls, and the families. All of it is in black and white, and there are also printed photos of people, the characters of movie. The newspapers are moved around and the names and credits are placed, as if on a projector.
  3. What connotations do these images carry?                                                                                                 The titles of the newspapers show what the movie is about. Since most of the titles are about ghost hunters and supernatural killings, the audience can assume that the movie will be a supernatural horror. For example, one of the newspaper clippings says "Malevolent Spirit Torments Home," which could mean that the movie has a haunted house. The black and white photos, the newspapers, and the projector make it seem that the movie takes place in an earlier period of time.
  4. How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?                                                            The background music establishes an uneasy feeling from the outset. It is low and dark, which sets the mood for the movie. The titles of the newspapers also develops the feeling of a horror film. They are all under the same subject, ghosts and haunted houses. It gives an eerie feeling among the audience.
  5. What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?                                                The cover of the film is clearly depicting something terrifying. The dead tree and the noose clearly represent something dark in the movie.
  6. How has technology been used effectively? You want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques.

The editing of the newspapers moving around and moving words onto it, representing a projector, was clever. It allows for the audience to understand who the characters are and what kind of horror the movie is about.
