Genre Research: Thriller and Comedy

 



Thriller Genre

  • Common camera angles in your genre (CAMS)
    • High-angle shots are popular among many thriller films, because it gives the effect of looking down on the subject, making them appear vulnerable or powerless. Close-up shots are used to show the audience the reaction of the character. This shot is also used to capture important details that are important to the film.
  • Common Mis-En-Scene in your genre (CLAMPS)
    • Low-key lighting is the most commonly used lighting in thrillers, because the darker the scene is, the more sinister the mood is. 
  • Common Editing in your genre
    • In thriller films, slow-paced editing is used to create suspense and convey that something big is about to happen. Fast-paced editing is also used in thrillers, typically in an action scene to convey a lot of intense energy and anger.
  • Common sound in your genre
    • Thrillers typically have non-diegetic music that's dark and eerie to build up tension and the climax.
  • Example films of your genres
    • Some example of thrillers are Inception, Bird Box, and Ocean's Twelve. 
  • What elements of the genre that you like?
    •  I like the sense of suspense in thrillers and the build up of tensions from the music and background, because it usually leads to a jump scare.
  • What elements of the genre do not appeal to you?
    • Some elements that do not appeal to me is the lighting, because it creates a sense of dread or something bad is going to happen.

Comedy Genre

  • Common camera angles in your genre (CAMS)
    • The mid-shot angle is most commonly used in comedies, because it helps keep the audience focused on the comedic performance, instead of getting distracted. 
  • Common Mis-En-Scene in your genre (CLAMPS)
    • High-key lighting is common in comedies, because it illuminates the whole scene and shows which character to focus on. It also creates a bright, happy moos within the scene.
  • Common Editing in your genre
    • In comedies, there will sometimes be a slow-motion scene, usually when someone is falling, etc., to show the audience the ridiculousness of them and to show the character's face while falling or getting hurt. It is typically used to over-dramatize the scene, too.
  • Common sound in your genre
    • Non-diegetic sounds and sound effects are very common in comedy films. Sound effects such as, people laughing when the character is telling a joke, is common in most comedy tv shows.
  • Example films of your genres
    • Some popular comedy films are Step Brothers, Anchorman: the Legend of Ron Burgundy, and Superbad.
  • What elements of the genre that you like?
    • Some elements of comedy that I like is the editing, because the film is usually specifically edited in an overdramatic way to make the scene funnier.
  • What elements of the genre do not appeal to you?
    • Some elements that do not appeal to me are the background sounds or sound effects, because I personally believe that they are over-used and do not make the scene funny.
