Filming Blog: Rainy Day

Image
I started filming over the course of my Thanksgiving break. The week off gave me plenty of time to film and reshoot any scenes. It took a couple takes of each scene to have plenty of choices. The first few scenes were shot in my room. I did not have someone hold the camera in these scenes to avoid shakiness. Instead, I leant it against my window sill. This made it easier to change angles, and also to make it steadier. Although, for the high angle, my sister held the camera. She has a bunk bed next to mine which allowed her to be higher. I had the music playing in the background so it was easier for me to lip sync it. It was playing on my computer at my desk. The other scenes were shot at a room in my apartment complex. I didn't have binoculars, so I improvised. I just did a hand gesture as if I was looking far away. My sister also held the camera at these scenes. The ones with me and her together were tricky. My other family was busy and there wasn't anyone around to help us. ...

Planning Storyboard for my Music Video

Image
Scene 1: This beginning of the song is just a piano intro. This will be a POV shot of me playing random keys to make it look like I'm actually playing the song. This scene is going to be seven seconds. Scene 2: This scene doesn't have any lyrics either, and it will be a mid-shot. I am going to enter my room and it will look like I just came home from work and it will be four seconds.  Scene 3: The lyrics 'I work all night I work all day to pay the bills I have to pay' will be heard in this scene. It will be me lip-syncing the lyrics and sitting down on the bed, because I am really tired as a mid-shot. Scene 4: My sister will come in the room singing the background lyric 'Ain't it sad.' This will be a two-shot. Scene 5: This scene will be me paying my sister the bills and it will also be a two-shot.  Scene 6: I will be shaking my wallet and show that I have no money left. My sister will shrug her shoulders and it will be another two-shot. Scene 7: This scene...

Planning for my Music Video

Image
The song that will be featured in my music video is Money Money Money by ABBA. It's genre is a musical, so most of the video will be me lip-syncing the lyric to have the appearance that I am singing. For the dancing, I will be doing very theatrical gestures and expressions. Props: Most of the props that will be included in the video will be "rags and riches." For example, I plan on having a shot where it seems like it will be raining money. So, I will be using Monopoly money for that scene. There is one lyric of the song saying that the character must find a wealthy man. During this line, I want to use binoculars as an overdramatic way of looking for my wealthy man. Costumes: My costumes will have the same effect as the props idea: rags to riches. In the beginning, I will have dirty clothes, or cheap clothes to suggest that I have had a long day at work. Later on, I will switch to a fancy dress as a way to say that I want to be rich. Accessories are also a really importa...

Research Blog: Music Video Conventions

Image
The genre of my music video is a musical. The song Money Money Money by ABBA is best known for the Mamma Mia musical, with many more ABBA songs. It is a very dramatic and theatrical part of the movie, which is what I am planning to do with my music video. The typical conventions of a musical are lots of singing and choreographed dancing. The songs in the musical are usually performed by the main characters of the movie. The characters convey the emotions expressed in the song to help the audience understand what is happening. Obviously, I will not be singing in the video, because the project requires the actual song. Instead of singing the song, I will be lip-syncing the lyrics. The purpose of this is to make it seem as if I am actually singing the song to tell the story. For dancing, I will probably do melodramatic gestures and expressions to convey the story of the song. In musicals, the song and dance portion are directed towards the viewer of the film, or camera, instead to so...

Introduction to Music Video Project

Image
For my music video, I have decided to work alone, with the exception of my sister acting with me in the video. I thought it would be easier to have her be in the video with me, instead of having to rely on someone else. I generally like working alone, because I can edit or change an aspect of the video without having to come to a compromise. Working alone is better for me, because I plan on having the music video done at my apartment complex or somewhere near it, and I won't have to wait on anybody. The song that I have decided to be in my music video is Money Money Money by ABBA. I chose this song, because I have always loved the movie Mamma Mia. I've been obsessed with ABBA songs ever since I watched that movie. When I was figuring out which song to choose, I decided to look through all my songs on Spotify. I have a lot of songs saved on it, ad there are all songs I know and love, so I thought that it would make the process easier. I scrolled through for about half and hour ...

Critical Reflection Blog

My commercial project uses conventions, because I included the typical props, costumes, and style of Vans commercials, based on my research. While I was looking at different commercials of Vans, I noticed that most of them include skating, and the settings are either, skate parks, garages, or just the open road. I attempted to include most of these conventions into my own commercial. Such as, trying to do a skate trick and showing the many benefits of the shoes. The project includes the social group of skaters, and it represents the importance of a good shoe while skating. My commercial engages with audiences, because I included certain styles and aspects to it that can correlate to having fun and being happy. For example, I included up-bet and fun music that many people can enjoy in my commercial. I also edited some bright filters and shot my commercial with the sunset in the background, because the audience can enjoy it more and find it visually pleasing to them. It would be distribu...

AICE Media Studies VANS Commercial

Image
This commercial project is my first major filming project, and I feel very satisfied with the production. Of course, there is always room for improvement. I had originally planned for there to be one more actor in the commercial, but it did not go to plan. I wanted to convey the message that Vans makes skating more fun, especially with friends. When I was doing research of Vans commercials, there were a couple where there were a group of friends skating and doing tricks. I felt like that showing a friendship in the commercial would make it more appealing. Nonetheless, I believe that the message that Vans makes a very enjoyable skating experience was still conveyed in the commercial. Another improvement I could have made in my project, was the logo. I could not figure out how to implement the actual logo of Vans in the video. Instead, I inserted regular text that said "VANS Off the Wall." I also felt like I could have improved with the filming. I directed exactly which able to...

Editing Blog: Finding the Right Song

Image
Once I got all my shots, I made sure to edit them to the right part of the clip and the right duration. I spent most of the time trimming all the clips, and deciding which clips were the best. I then exported all the clips to this editing app on my phone called Prequel. I wanted the commercial to have a bright and happy look. I put some filters on it and added some saturation. In one of the clips, I even added a fisheye filter to it, because it made the clip seem more fun. I had many different variations of the same clip, because I wanted some of the movements to match the beats of the song I chose. For example, I wanted to open the door right at the moment the song started. I even tried to do the skate trick at the beat drop. I had a couple ideas of what song to put into my commercial. I knew for sure that it would be an up-beat and rock type of song, so I looked through the music that I had. I then decided on Remember When by the Wallows. It's a very catchy song that a lot of peo...

Filming Blog: Bruises and Scrapes

Image
I started filming my commercial on Sunday, the 1st of November. I was planning on filming it on the Thursday before with my friend, Bella, as on of the actors. However, there were some last minute changes, because Bella had an unexpected emergency, and she did not have any other time to do it. So, I decided to improvise and have me be the only actor in my commercial. I did most of the acting myself, but I did need help with the filming. I initially thought that I could do the filming myself too, but I realized that it was very difficult. I asked my younger sister for assistance in holding the camera for scenes. Before filming, I got ready by putting on baggy jeans, a basic white t-shirt, and a black and white flannel. In addition, I brought my skateboard and also wore my Vans sneakers, of course. My sister used parked cars in the garage to lean my phone on while filming in some scenes. The filming went pretty well and I had very few complications with it. We used various objects, ...
