Planning Blog: Location, Schedule, Participants, Health and Safety

I had to work my schedule out according to my mom's work. On March 10th, I will be traveling to a different state for my mom's work. We will be in upstate New York, and there are a lot of woods out there. So I figured that up North would be a good place to shoot the scenes with the killer. And I could film the scenes of my mom and I at our apartment in Florida. My mom, sister, and I will take turns filming, depending on who is not in the scene at that time. For example, my sister would film the first few scenes with the mom and Allison (the victim). I would shoot the scenes that star just the killer. My mom would shoot the scenes with the killer and Allison. The schedule may change, as well as locations, if something changes. If it does, I will shoot the killer scenes in the park across the street from my apartment. I only have 3 actors, which should be enough, but I might add extras if I find someone else. My mom will be present throughout the filming to make sure we are bei...

Planning Blog: Title Design

I worked on the titles for about a day. It took me some time to figure out the names of the studio and production company. I was worried that there was already a studio or company with the same name. While I was thinking of my Studio name, I was eating sushi for lunch. I couldn't really think of anything else so I decided on Sushi Studios. It is also my friends' fun nickname for me. After some research, I found that there wasn't a studio with the same name. For my production company, I was also a little stumped. I searched up some common production companies to get an idea for mine. Some had strange names like, Rooster Teeth, and I realized it doesn't have to mean anything. So I decided to go on my Spotify and shuffle all my songs. The first song that came on was 505 by Arctic monkeys and I decided that could work. For the title of my movie, I wanted something ironic. A nice and fun clown name, when it really is for a horror movie. I got the inspiration from other hor...

Genre Research: The Boy

Image
What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have? In this movie, there is a little bit of mystery to it. There is a nanny who babysits a "boy," when it's really just a doll. But the doll eventually starts terrorizing the nanny. She has to figure out how to escape and find clues on how to make it out of the house alive. For my final task, I would have the killer trap the victims or victim in a house. They would have to try to find a way to escape the house. The killer in my movie would haunt the house and attempt to kill everyone in the house. What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like? I liked how unexpected everything was. The doll would trap the nanny in the attic or mess up her room. She would be very wary of the doll and scared that the doll would kill her. Throughout the whole movie, the audience would be on edge. The character nor the audience would know what the doll would do next. It added to the suspense...

Genre Research: Halloween (1978)

Image
What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have? In this movie, the serial killer, Michael Myers, stalk his victims. His victims are a group of high school friends. Every time he appears, the friends slowly start getting suspicious, especially since he always has a creepy mask on. In my final task, I plan to have the killer stalk the victims. I still haven't decided whether it will be one person or more that are targeted. In this movie, Michael Myers hunts the girls down and only one of the friends survive. In my final task, if I cast a group of friends, I will also have only one person left alive.  What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like? An element that I like in this movie is the theme song. It plays in the opening sequence of the movie. During the movie the theme song slowly builds up whenever Michael Myers appears. Sometimes, he is in the shot when it plays, but sometimes he's not. It lets the audience know w...

Genre Research: IT

Image
What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have? The movie is mostly genre, but there are a lot of other subgenres to it. For example, there it could also be mystery. In this movie, the kids are trying to figure out a way to survive the clown and try to find a way to get rid of him. In my final task, I plan to have the main characters try to find out who is the person stalking them and how to trick the killer. It would ort of be mystery, because they try to look for clues on who the killer is. The antagonist in IT is a supernatural clown, because he can make his victims see things that aren't really there. I will base my killer off of IT, because I believe that most people are scared of killer clowns than actual serial killers. However, my killer will not be supernatural. What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like?   In this movie, I liked how there was something that let the kids know that Pennywise was near. W...

What titles are displayed during the opening sequences?                                                                            First, the opening sequence showed two pictures of families. One is labeled the Perron family, and the other was the Warren family. I assume that these are the families in the movies. Next, it includes all the names of the actors and actresses. The sequence then displays the writers, the director, the producers, and photography. It also shows the editing, the casting, the designers, and the music. Then all the production companies are listed and the title is shown. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?                                          ...

Title Research: Watch the Titles Website

Image
This website is called Watch the Titles. It provides a variety of different title sequences from different forms of media. There are films, video games, tv shows, and more. There are also events made on the website, student projects, and even French films. When you click on one of the title sequences, it shows you a video of it. I watched a couple of them, mostly the ones films or shows I have watched before. Below the video, the website provides an interview with the director of the title sequence. There is also information about the film, such as, the director, years of production, the design, etc. There is also a short summary about the film and explains what it is about. On the top of the website, there are categories, designers and studios. This takes you to a list of the different designers of the website and some who made the projects. The studio category shows you what kind of studio programs they used to make the title sequences.

Title Research: Art of the Title Website

Image
This website is called the Art of the Title, and I went on it and explored what it had. There were many useful features about different opening sequences of movies. There are even some videos of the opening sequences, and there is sometimes an article or summary about it. It usually talks about the purpose of sequence. There are some really creative title sequences and the summary goes into depth in the effect it has on the audience and film. They have a drop down menu to view all the titles or all features. The titles include hundreds of movies over the past years and information about the sequence. They include a variety of genres and provide information about the directors, the studio, and what program they used for the title sequence. Sometime, the movies also have the interviews of the actors or directors. The features include these categories of title sequences. For example, "Top 10 Title Sequences of 2020" or "American Horror Story:7 Seasons of Title Design....

Genre Decision Blog

For the opening sequence, I chose to do horror. I have done a lot of research into this genre and I feel very comfortable with doing it. I have a lot of information of the conventions and elements of horror. I know what type of lighting, angles, props, settings, costumes, etc. are popular among horror films. I also believe that I have a good idea for the final task. I had other choices of genres to do the opening sequence with. It was between horror, science fiction, and maybe mystery. When I was brainstorming, though, I realized I had a much more established idea for horror. I usually watch a lot of horror movies. Although, I usually watch them near Halloween. I also believe that I have a really good pitch for the opening sequence. Most of the props are easily accessible and some I can get from my house. I am going to use my sister's old Halloween costume for the killer. Since I already have some of the necessary materials, it would be easier for me to do. For research, I am goin...

Genre Research: Thriller and Comedy

Image
Thriller Genre Common camera angles in your genre (CAMS) High-angle shots are popular among many thriller films, because it gives the effect of looking down on the subject, making them appear vulnerable or powerless. Close-up shots are used to show the audience the reaction of the character. This shot is also used to capture important details that are important to the film. Common Mis-En-Scene in your genre (CLAMPS) Low-key lighting is the most commonly used lighting in thrillers, because the darker the scene is, the more sinister the moo d is.  Common Editing in your genre In thriller films, slow-paced editing is used to create suspense and convey that something big is about to happen. Fast-paced editing is also used in thrillers, typically in an action scene to convey a lot of intense energy and anger. Common sound in your genre Thrillers typically have non-diegetic music that's dark and eerie to build up tension and the climax. Example films of your genres Some example of...

Genre Research Blog: Horror

This project is about the horror genre. I did this project in the beginning of the year. I researched about all the elements and conventions of horror. Conventions such as the use of CAMS, CLAMPS, music, etc. and how they affect the film were all part of the slideshow. Some of the elements were self-explanatory and pretty obvious in horror. For example, the lighting in horror films are usually dark and low. Anyone who has seen a horror movie knows that the low lighting is necessary in horror to create a creepy and foreboding mood. Other conventions, however, were harder to find in horror. The props and setting in horror were difficult to explain. There are many different settings that horror films take place, and the killers in the movie have their own "signature" weapon. The different props and settings is what differentiates each well-known horror movie killer. For instance, Michael Myers has the hockey mask, Chucky is a doll, and Pennywise has the red balloon. This is wh...

My Pitch

Image
I was brainstorming ideas for my final task for a couple days. For research, I first decided which genres I like and can do best. I watched different movies as inspiration of some sort. I decided that horror or suspense would be a good genre for the final task. I am more comfortable doing these genres, because I have watched a lot of these movies and know what is good in a horror or suspense film. While brainstorming, I came up with a couple of different movie ideas. One of them is a science fiction movie. It would have most of the elements of a sci-fi, a mad scientist, a lab, and some sort of potion. I was thinking of including a monster, sort of like Frankenstein, that comes from the potion. I wanted to include a chase between the cops and the scientist, and one between the scientist and the monster. My other pitch idea is a classic serial killer movie. I got my inspiration from the Halloween movie. The serial killer would be a stalker that stalks either one person or a group of frie...

Intro Blog: Starting the Final Task

Image
My name is Sasha Grivas and I am a student at Fort Lauderdale High School. I am a junior and this is my first year in Media Studies. I don't have any personal experience with doing film or any type of media before. However, I have learned so much knowledge so far this year about different shots, angles, movements, and genres. I have started to enjoy doing media, such as filming, editing, directing, etc. After doing some filming projects, I feel a lot more comfortable with filming. I am not as stressed as I would be, since I have had some practice throughout the year. For the final task, I have decided to do the project by myself. Personally, I work better alone. It is easier for me to decide on an idea that I like, instead of arguing with a partner on a pitch. For the next couple of months, I will also be out of state because of my mom's work. I would not be able to meet up with a group to film together. Most of the media projects I have done this year, I worked alone. I have...
